Purpose
The aim of our study was to demonstrate the relationship between clinical parameters and the elasticity and blood flow of trigger point in patients with myofascial pain syndrome.
Methods and Materials
The study included 100 patients with chronic neck pain and an active trigger point in the upper trapezius who were included in the physical therapy program at our clinic.
Patients were followed up for 3 months before treatment and 1 month and 3 months after treatment.
In the clinical evaluation; pain grade on visual analogue scale (VAS),
cervical lateral flexion angle (ROM) with goniometer,
physical function subgroup scale of short form-36 (SF-36),
anxiety subgroup parameter of profile of mood scale (POMS) and neck disability index...
Results
The treatment-induced changes in the elasticity and BFS parameters are shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The correlationresults are given in Table 1.
While there was no correlation between initial clinical and ultrasonographic findings of the patients; especially in the late period of follow-up there was a significant correlation between both elasticity and Doppler and clinical parameters (p <0.01).
Conclusion
In the early period of follow-up,
physiological changes with the treatment at the tissue were reflected as improvement in pain to the clinic.
In the late period of follow-up,
in addition to the pain parameter the improvements in functional parameters are consistent with the change in the tissue.
Ultrasonography can be used as an objective imaging tool compatible with the clinic in follow-up.
