Auflage (1976) bis zur 8. (1990, 1994) waren im 4. Band der „Exkursionsflora von Deutschland“ nur einzelne Korrekturen und Ergänzungen vorgenommen worden. Die gründliche Neubearbeitung der 9. Auflage (Jäger & Werner 2001) enthält viele Neuerungen (Artenbestand, Schlüssel, Abbildungen, Zeigerwerte, Standortsangaben usw.). Die Gesamtareal-Beschreibung in den Arealdiagnosen berücksichtigt jetzt auch die Amplitude im Kontinentalitätsgefälle und die synanthrope Ausbreitung in andere Kontinente, die zugleich ein Hinweis auf die Hemerophilie ist. Die biologischen Angaben bei den Arten betreffen den Laubrhythmus, den Beblätterungstyp (Rosettenbildung), den Lebensformtyp, die Lebensdauer, die Überdauerungsorgane, die vegetative Reproduktion, die Bestäubung und andere blütenbiologische Besonderheiten, den Ausbreitungsmodus, die Lebensdauer der Samen (Samenbank) und die Keimungsbedingungen. Sachliche und terminologische Probleme bei der Charakterisierung dieser Eigenschaften werden hier diskutiert.

Since the 4th edition of the “Exkursionsflora von Deutschland”, vol. 4, up to the 8th one (1990, 1994), only some additions and minor corrections had been made. In the 9th edition (Jäger & Werner 2001) very great advances had to be considered that have been brought about by investigations on the taxonomy of the vascular plants that grow in Germany (including the aliens), of their changing distribution, their ecology and life history. All this new work has resulted in the complete rewriting of the book. The distribution in Germany is now described in 5 roughly defined degrees of abundance in the “Bundesländer” resp. their parts on the basis of many floristic atlasses. The data on the status (indigenous plants, established archeophytes resp. neophytes, casuals) were corrected and in some cases regionally differentiated. The general distribution is characterized in the form of “range diagnoses” that give now also the amplitude with regard to the gradient of continentality as well as the anthropogenous range expansion into other continents. This also enables one to judge to a certain degree on the hemerophily. Besides, more information to those interested in the ecology and population biology of the plants is included now, namely the indicator values and data on growth form, flower ecology, dispersal and germination. Growth form data include leaf rhythm, position and character of innovation organs, life span, clonal growth and vegetative reproduction respectively. Problems in providing such information are discussed.
