Abstract:
Each year, 250-300 work accidents happen in North Cyprus and 6-10 people lose their lives in such accidents. These figures cannot be underestimated when their percentage in the overall population is considered. There have been no studies completed on the public discontentedness felt and its causes to date. The main thesis of this study is that despite the Occupational Health and Safety Law (35/2008) as well as the associated regulations are compatible with global values, the related sectors are discontented with the practices due to shortcomings. In parallel, the aim of this study has been to scrutiny the overall situation in terms of the government and the affected institutions and individuals, identify the causes of such discontentment and offer ways to solve it. The study has largely used qualitative methods in reaching its objective. In determining the current situation in the North Cyprus, expert opinions and experiences as well as state statistics were benefited from and consequently a SWOT analysis was made. This study has recorded that sufficient law and regulations existed in the North Cyprus regarding occupational health and safety. However, there is not sufficient information, training and inspection carried out by the government and the employers do not regard this issue as a priority due to economic problems. This study has concluded that occupational health and safety needs to be developed in North Cyprus and has thus made relevant proposals have been made.
