Abstract

In this work, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was modified with 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), which has been considered in the last decade as a “platform molecule” for the production of biobased polymeric materials. Modification of PVA was carried out by acetalization to obtain PVA/5-HMF polymers with different content of the modifying agent. The effect of acetal groups on the water absorption of the resulting polymers was determined from the degree of swelling of the samples. It was found that with an increase in the concentration of the modifier, the degree of swelling of the polymers decreases, and the thermophysical properties improve significantly. The best results were shown by PVA/5-HMF-20 polymers having heat resistance up to 368°C and a degree of swelling of 71%.
