Abstract
The Jabal Afaf area, lying in the Asir Terrane of the Upper Proterozoic Arabian Shield, is underlain by north-trending belts of layered metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks, which are intruded by syn- to post-tectonic rocks. Earlier geochemical studies on the layered metavolcanic rocks suggested their origin in an immature oceanic island arc environment. Based on their petrological characteristics, the plutonic rocks in the Jabal Afaf area can be subdivided into two main groups of rocks, gabbro-diorite-tonalite (dioritoids) and granodiorite-granite-quartz monzonite (granitoids). Structural fabrics in the former group indicate them to be earlier than the more felsic granitoid group. The geochemistry of the plutonic rocks indicates a tholeiitic affinity and suggests a fractionation trend from a primitive magma. This interpretation is compatible with the geochemistry of the associated layered sequences.
