A fishing boat or aresearch vessel often has to make a short time drifting during its fishing or observation work. The wind has a vital role on the drifting of a ship which is supple mental by the effect of a urrent. Because of a difficulty of eliminating the influnce of the current, the effect of wind as one of the components of drift has not been measured satisfactorily. The authors tried to measure the drifting distance and direction of a ship by a simple device, a bamboo pole, 3.9 meters in length of which of 3.6 meter lower part is submerged with a 4.5kg sinker, made on adrift the side of the ship. The pole is connected to the ship with a string which is paid out from the ship as she moves away from the pole. Experiments were conducted 344 times at 69 stations in the Suruga Bay and in the vicinity of the Ogasawara Islands on board the Bosei Maru (1104 groos tons) and the Tokaidaigaku Maru II (702 gross tons) from June 13 to Octorber 8, 1976.
