Abstract
A first-hand account orally recorded by Ken Winkler of his interview with Li Gotami on the life of her deceased husband, Lama Anagarika Govinda. Mr. Winkler interviewed Li Gotami on August 19, 1995 in Mill Valley, California, and here relays what she told him. The 25-minute account focuses on how Ernst Lothar Hoffman studied Buddhism, became a lama himself, and married (on three occasions) Li Gotam i. Also includes some details on their personal life together in Almora, India, and her own experiences and acquaintances (including Gertrude Stein, etc.), and life as an artist.

The account was orally recorded by Ken Winkler immediately following the interview. Ken Winkler is a retired professor of English at Santa Monica College. He was a student of Lama Govinda, and is author of the biography, "A Thousand Journeys: The biog raphy of Lama Anagarika Govinda" (Element Books, 1990).
Note (Biographical)
Lama Anagarika Govinda (1898-1985), born in Germany as Ernst Lothar Hoffman, was the founder of the order of the Arya Maitreyea Mandala and a teacher of Buddhist meditation. He is author of the book, Way of the White Clouds, and other works on Tibetan mysticism. In 1947, he married Li Gotami, a Parsi artist from Bombay. Together they traveled in Tibet, lived for many years in India, and finally retired in northern California.
