TUBERCULOSIS HAS long been recognised as a disease. In the 4th century BC Hippocrates called it phthises, a wasting disease affecting the lungs. It was not until1882 that Robert Koch announced the discovery of the tubercle bacillus, or Mycobacterium tuberculosis, as it was later known.
