Ambulance responses at a disaster site

Suserud BjÖrn-Ove Assistant Professor, Borås University College, School of Health Sciences, Borås, Sweden

BJORN-OVE SUSERUD details ambulance crews’ personal reactions to a major incident in Sweden which claimed 63 lives

Personnel working in the pre-hospital field often face situations that place high demands on their creativity and competence. Care is to be given in all contexts that may involve patients with physical, psychological and social problems. One complex area is work at a disaster site, both natural and man-made (de Boer 1994), which can be defined as an extreme situation with repercussions for ambulance, rescue and hospital personnel (de Boer 1999).
