Abstract

The correspondencies among many published data of various experiments on graphitizing carbons are discussed as a function of interlayer spacing. Many data considered here are consistent with a model in which the graphite-like layers in the cokes with d002>3.42Å consist of small elemental domains which are of 10-30Å in diameter and tilt by an angle of roughly 10° with their neighbors. The main change at the initial stage of graphitization (>3.42Å and<1900-2000°C) is the elimination of tilt and twist boundaries between the elemental domains in a layer and also of tilt boundaries between the layers. After straightening of layers (<3.42Å), the elimination of α-axis misorientation between domains occurs in the straightened layers and consequently the stacking misorientation between layers is eliminated.
