Echiniscus bigranulatus Richters 1908

Description

Echiniscus bigranulatus Richters, 1908

Localities and number of specimens. II (15), III (10), V (17), VI (8), XVII (2), XX (28)

Remarks. The species belongs to a Neotropical and Antarctic bigranulatus group and can be easily mistaken with other members of the group (e.g. Michalczyk & Kaczmarek 2006, 2007; McInnes 2009). It is widely distributed in South and Central America (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Paraguay) (Kaczmarek et al. 2014, 2015). It was also reported in Europe, Africa, Indonesia and New Zealand (McInnes 1994), however non-Neotropical-Antarctic reports are probably misidentifications. Thus, all the records prior to 2006 require re-examination to confirm species identification (Michalczyk & Kaczmarek 2006).
