Description

Lagocephalus lagocephalus (Linnaeus, 1758).

Oceanic Puffer. To 61 cm (24 in) TL (Miller and Lea 1972). Circumglobal; western Pacific Ocean north to Japan (Yamada in Nakabo 2002), and southern Kuril Islands (Parin 2003); Alder Creek Beach, Mendocino County, northern California (Miller and Lea 1972) to Peru (Grove and Lavenberg 1997), including Islas Galápagos (Grove and Lavenberg 1997); at least one Gulf of California record (23°39.35’N, 109°40.77’W) (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California). Oceanic; depth: near surface (Eschmeyer and Herald 1983) to at least 1,000 m (3,280 ft) (Shipp in Carpenter 2003).
