Description

Lutriwita gen. nov.

Diagnostic description. Antennae calceoli present. Antenna 1 slightly longer than antenna 2. Antenna 1 accessory flagellum absent; flagellum, aesthetascs inconspicuous. Mandible molar triturative. Labium inner lobes absent. Maxilla 1 inner plate setose along inner margin; palp article 1 shorter than article 2; palps alike. Maxilla 2 inner plate as broad as outer; inner plate with oblique setal row. Maxilliped outer plate not bulbous, palp article 4 reduced. Gnathopod 1 similar in size and form to gnathopod 2. Gnathopod 1 subchelate; carpus longer than propodus, without posterior lobe. Gnathopod 2 carpus subequal in length to propodus, without posterior lobe; carpus/propodus subrectangular. Pereopods 3–7 prehensile simple. Pereopods 3–7 dactyli smooth. Pereopods 3–7 dactyli not bifid. Pereopod 5 coxa, posterior lobe deeper than anterior lobe. Pleonites 1–2 without dorsal spines. Epimeron 3 posterior margin smooth, posteroventral corner not produced, minutely notched. Urosomites 1–2 dorsal spines absent. Urosomite 1 with distoventral robust seta. Uropods 1–2 rami with marginal robust setae. Uropod 2 inner ramus longer than outer ramus. Uropod 3 rami margins with sparse robust setae; inner ramus subequal to outer ramus. Telson broader than long, emarginate.

Etymology. Lutriwita, an aboriginal name for Tasmania.

Remarks. Lutriwita closely resembles the Antarctic marine genus Lopyastis Thurston, 1974. Lopyastis apparently does not have calceoli (present in Lutriwita) and has a longer telson (broad in Lutriwita) that is deeply notched (emarginate in Lutriwita).
