CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS OF RELATIVE CLAUSES IN ALBANIAN AND ENGLISH – STRUCTURE AND USAGE

Description

The correct use of languages by speakers includes a complex system of grammatical knowledge. A basic fact about words in all languages is that, although they are many in number, they can still be grouped into a relatively small number of classes called syntactic categories. The linguistic aspect where it becomes more apparent than in any other aspect, is the way of connecting words of a language to form grammatical sentences. In this thesis we have dealt precisely this system of rules and categories on which sentences are built in every language. Within this system of rules, we treat the categories of clauses in this case, the relative clauses, their role in extended sentence, their role in complex sentences, their function and their position within the sentences. This treatment will be comparative between two languages, Albanian and English, where the description of linguistic phenomena will be not only descriptive but also explanatory, and where we will try to enter into the linguistic phenomena of s above mentioned syntactic terms in these two languages, by clarifying the common grammatical principles in both languages and, on the other hand, on the features and specifications of each of them. Generally speaking, compared to Albanian, English language is more explored. For this reason, some syntax phenomena of the Albanian language, in this paper, are analyzed from an empirical point of view, which makes the further researches in this area, indispensable.
