Distribution. Western Atlantic—Bermuda, USA (Florida), Bahamas, Gulf of Mexico, Honduras, Antilles, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, Guianas, Brazil (Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina) (Rathbun 1901, 1918; Boone 1930; Holthuis 1959; Fausto-Filho 1966; Chace & Hobbs 1969; Coelho & Ramos 1972; Powers 1977; Keith 1985; Abele & Kim 1986; Branco 1991; Felder et al. 2009; Diez & Jover 2015).

Remarks. Previous records on the coast of São Paulo state include Ilhabela (Ilha de São Sebastião) (Rathbun 1918), Ubatuba (Negreiros-Fransozo et al. 2002). This is a mangrove species with commercial importance; recently it was included in the “List of Overexploited or Threatened Species of Overexploitation” (Pinheiro & Boos 2016). Sequences accession number (GenBank): CCDB 2691—16S (MF490171), COI (MF490075) (Mantelatto et al. 2018a).
