Helmsdale Fishing Village - 1890 Reconstruction

The village of Helmsdale in the north of Scotland was once a major fishing port. Located in Sutherland, the local community caught and cured herring on a vast scale. This reconstruction shows how the harbour and fish curing facilities at Helmsdale may have looked in  c.1890, near the height of the herring trade. The reconstruction was created by staff and students at the University of St Andrews with historical information provided by the archaeologist Jacquie Aitken.

A collaborative project between Open Virtual Worlds, a research team within the School of Computer Science, University of St Andrews and Timespan Museum.
