Objective: This study aims to analyze the eye movement of kiosks for the elderly in order to contribute to improving the convenience and usability of kiosks for the elderly.

Background: The number of kiosks is increasing rapidly with the trend of digitally transformed society and increasing consumption patterns of non-face-to-face purchases. As technology advances, the number of seniors who have difficulty using kiosks is increasing. While research and systems related to kiosk usability are focused on improving the convenience of the disabled, there is a need for research and systems for the elderly.

Method: A group of 10 younger (control group) and 10 older (experimental group) users performed eight tasks using a "café" kiosk. During the tasks, eye-tracking devices were used to measure and analyze data on gaze share, gaze frequency, and path of gazing at the kiosk display, and in-depth interviews were conducted along with behavioral observations.

Results: The success rate was lower for the younger group than the older age group, and the task execution time was more than double for the older age group compared to the task execution time for the younger age group in most of the tasks. It was found that older adults required twice as much eye contact to complete kiosk tasks compared to younger adults and older adults have a narrower field of vision and a lot of unnecessary staring. The elderly has difficulty with foreign language and terminology.

Conclusion: The study analyzed eye-tracking data and identified several usability issues. Improvements include placing content at the right height and angle of the gaze, minimal information and features, automatic and responsive screen design, emphasis and attention, and use of plain language. Based on the findings of this study, follow-up studies are needed to verify their effectiveness.

Application: This study can be used in the future when designing a universal kiosk for the elderly.
