|
"Within normative Christian traditions, Petro is considered one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus and the first Pope within the Roman Catholic tradition. In the Qur'an, there is one verse that infers the story of Petro's preaching in Antioch, and some narrations about him can be found in Islamic traditions, especially Shī`ī traditions. However, the Shī`ī views concerning Petro are neither well known nor covered in previous academic studies. Here, we discuss how Petro is described in Shī`ī narrations and how Shī`ī scholars utilize and interpret “Christian traditions" within the framework of their thought. We find that Petro is described as a successor of Jesus and a previous example of the Shī`ī imam in a manner similar to `Alī as a successor of the Prophet Muḥammad. Shī`ī interpretations of Petro's story demonstrate that Shī`ī scholars were willing to utilize Christian-oriented traditions, but by deliberately interpreting them in harmony with their doctrine. Specifically, this was done to authorize their doctrine of Imāma by retrospectively ascribing the characteristics of imams to early Christian saints."
