ABSTRACT

This chapter interprets the entrepreneurial discovery process (EDP) as a process of new knowledge creation in the context of knowledge space. The chapter examines the role of tacit knowledge in the discovery with the help of knowledge-creation theories devised by Nonaka and Takeuchi (1995), theories of communities of practice (Wenger, 1998), and via the notion of relational space used in geographical research. Knowledge space for discovery emerges when entrepreneurial actors are mobilised, and connections between them are created. Both agents and knowledge spaces are transformed during the EDP. The chapter describes two tools to support the design of knowledge space in the context of EDP developed by Finnish researchers: a focus group meeting organised around gaps or expectations of the stakeholders used in the region of Ostrobothnia, as well as a regional development platform method centred around the expertise of future vision, used in the Lahti region.
