ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to identify promising career development services and practices, specific to middle and high school settings. It examines who is and who is not being served by effective career and workforce practices, what is needed to ensure the delivery of effective career services for marginalized populations and what are the career-and-workforce-based practices, and to what extent are they evidence-based, evidence-informed, or promising. The emancipatory communitarianism (EC) approach has assisted career and workforce development practitioners to empower clients and ensure social justice and equality in the world of work. The chapter describes EC relevance to middle and high school settings. It identifies various marginalized populations and describes relevant programs, interventions, and research. The chapter analyses, within this context, the extent to which the work appears to be evidence-based, evidence-informed, or promising. It presents a case study that illustrates some of the key recommendations identified and emergent from the literature as well.
