ABSTRACT

Fears are so great that life becomes limited to an impractical extent. Fear is a chain-reaction in the brain that starts with a stressful stimulus and ends with a number of responses including the release of chemicals that cause a racing heart, fast breathing and energised muscles. Fear is the root cause of all anxiety, including phobias, anxiety disorders and panic attacks and even anger. When anxiety becomes excessive it can be classified as an anxiety disorder. These disorders are often debilitating, chronic conditions and they can be present from an early age or can begin suddenly following a triggering event. Generalised anxiety disorder is a common chronic disorder characterised by long-lasting anxiety that is not focused on any one object or situation. The single largest category of anxiety disorder is phobia. Phobia is classified in two types: a simple phobia; and a complex phobia.
