ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 takes the reader through the ‘rules’ of essay writing by means of a series of twenty-four bullet-points or ‘fuses’. Distilled from the authors’ many years’ experience of reading and writing critical essays, the chapter offers suggestions on essay writing that range from taking notes to ways of addressing the reader, from how to structure an essay to how to use the first-person singular. The chapter outlines ways of making every word count and attempts to show how quoting well and writing clearly are at the heart of good essay writing.
