ABSTRACT

According to the Constitution promulgated on 5 February 2010, legislative power is vested in the Assembleia Nacional (National Assembly), with 220 members elected for five years on the basis of proportional representation. Executive power is held by the President, who serves a term of five years (renewable for a maximum of two terms). The leader of the political party, or coalition of political parties, obtaining the majority of votes in legislative elections shall be named President of the Republic and shall be assisted by a Vice-President; the position of Vice-President shall be filled by the deputy leader of the ruling party. As Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, the President governs with the assistance of an appointed Council of Ministers.
