Once upon a time, there was a poor old couple in a village. They worked as launderers for their living. There was a river near their house. They washed other people's clothes there. One day, a coconut was floating along the river while they were washing the clothes. The old man thought of eating that coconut and pulled it out of the water. They took it home. When they arrived home, they ate dinner and chatted. Later, they thought of eating the coconut. Then, they cut it. At that time, they saw a boy inside the coconut. There was a tiny boy in it. The old couple was surprised. They discussed, "Since we don't have any children, let's adopt him." They decided to adopt him. They raised him well. While they were washing the clothes at the river, their adopted son looked after the chicken that they were raising. He fed them. A crow always came there and ate the food when he fed the chicken. Then, they became friends. When the old couple went to the river to wash the clothes, the tiny boy went along with them. Later, he became friends with a frog. One day, the princess was kidnapped by a ghoul. The news spread to the whole country. Then, he told his parents, "Mom and Dad, I will save the princess." They told him, "My son, you are just a tiny boy. The ghoul is so big! You can't compete with the ghoul. How could you save the princess?" Both the crow and the frog heard him saying like that. They told him, "We will be with you." He said, "Okay. Accompany me then." The crow told him, "Since it is a long way, ride on me." The frog said, "No, ride on me. If you fall from him while flying, you can die. So, ride on me." Then, the crow said, "If he rides on you, he can fall when you hop." The frog said, "Oh, I have a friend: a porcupine. Let's call him to help us." Then, all of them rode on the porcupine. They set forth their journey. The porcupine took them to the cave where the ghoul lived. The ghoul was sleeping soundly at that time. The tiny boy told the crow to pour the sugar on the ghoul's body. Soon, the ants gathered there to eat the sugar. The ghoul was bitten by the ants and woke up. It was angry and shouted, "I will kill the ones who bite me!" At that moment, the crow pecked its eyes. The ghoul lost its eyesight. At that time, the porcupine shot his spines at the ghoul. The ghoul was attacked. Then, it heard the frog's screaming. So, it thought there would be water. It followed the frog's voice. The frog led it to the deep ravine. When the ghoul arrived at the ravine, the frog kept screaming. So, it thought it had arrived at the river. Then, it jumped right there. It fell down the ravine. Meanwhile, the princess shouted, "Help! Help!" The boy opened the door and saved her. Unfortunately, the ghoul didn't die and climbed up the ravine angrily. It said angrily, "Who pushed me to the ravine? I will kill him!" It marched toward the cave. Then, the porcupine put his spines up. The ghoul stepped on it and was injured. At that time, the princess stood near the ravine and shouted, "Help me! Help me!" The ghoul heard her and thought that she would be in the cave. It didn't know the princess was outside because it had lost its eyes. So, it walked toward the girl and fell into the ravine. Before that, the ghoul caught the tiny boy. It said, "I will eat you alive." Then, it blew him with his breath. Suddenly, the tiny boy changed into the big one. The boy picked up a rock and hit the ghoul. And he pushed it into the ravine. They all came back to the palace. The boy and the princess got married and lived happily together with his old parents.

Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
