Title Seng htu sa ai la a lam (The jade miner) with English translation
Description Translation (Rita Seng Mai)
The story I am going to tell you now is about a jade miner in Hpa Kant town. He was a jade miner for already ten years. However, he couldn't earn a penny by jade. He planted a banyan tree at the place where he usually searched for jade. After ten years as a jade miner, he wanted to go back home. The banyan tree that he planted was growing really tall. Then he went to that tree and made a wish: "You are growing this tall because I planted you. If I hadn't planted you, you wouldn't have grown this big. Give me some blessings. I want to go back home, so give me a jade." That night, he had a dream. It was, "You never have any luck to get a precious jade in your whole life. However, I will bless you with the jade. The jade is your fortune. A baby with a cleft lip will be born in the village. The baby will share his great fortune with you. This jade will give you great things. This is a way for you to go back home, too." The next day, he really got a jade. He picked it up and walked into the village. A baby with a cleft lip was born that day. The baby had been crying continuously since the day he was born. The man happened to walk past the baby's house. He told the house owner, "The baby is crying too hard. May I take a look at your baby?" The house owner said no. Then he just walked past that house. Later, the house owner called him again to see if he could do something for the baby not to cry. He said, "I don't know much about medicine. However, let me take a look at the baby." As soon as he entered the house, the baby stopped crying. Then he thought, "GOD told me that I got this jade not because of my fortune, but because of this baby's fortune. I will sell this jade and share the money with him." Therefore, he sold the jade and gave half the money to the baby's family. And he went back to his family.

Rai yang e shi gaw gumhpraw lap mi mung ndai lungseng hte seng na gumhpraw lap mi mung nlu sha re na shi gaw ndai lungseng htu wa ai shaloi lungseng nhkun htu ai makau kaw e dai shara kaw nan tu taw ai lagat hpun kachyi sha law ai dai hpe shi gaw htawt hkai tawn da ai da. Rai yang gaw 10 ning du tim shi gaw nta mung yu wa mayu sai da. 10 ning du na nta yu wa mayu re jang gaw dai lagat hpun gaw shi hkai da ai gaw grai kaba mat sai da. Shaloi shi gaw ndai lagat hpun kaw sa na e shana de sa na she lagat hpun e nang hpe mung ngai hkai tawn da ai re, dai majaw gaw dai ni ngai nang hpe nhkai da yang gaw nang ndai zawn re na sak hkrung lu na nre, dai majaw ngai mung nta de yu wa mayu ai, rai na ndai ngai hpe mung shaman jaw rit nang hpe ngai hkai tawn da ai, dai zawn ngai hpe mung lungseng shaman jaw rit ngu na nta mung yu wa mayu sai ngu na tsun ai da. Collection title Kachin folktales told in Jinghpaw
Description Recordings of Kachin folktales and related narratives in Jinghpaw. These materials were collected by Keita Kurabe, Gumtung Lu Awng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, Labang Tu La, Gumtung Htu Nan, and Lashi Seng Nan as part of community-based collaborative fieldwork in northern Myanmar. A total of 2,491 stories with 2,481 ELAN files, 2,481 transcriptions, and 1,369 translations are currently available (March 25, 2024). Transcriptions were contributed by Gumtung Lu Awng, Pausa La Ring, Galang Lu Hkawng, Sumdu Ja Seng Roi, Hpauhkum Htu Bu, and Keita Kurabe. Stories were translated by Nbanpa Rita Seng Mai, Sumlut Gun Mai, Lazing Htoi San, Maran Seng Pan, Dumdaw Mike Tu Awng, Nhkum Htoi Awng, and Keita Kurabe.
