Abstract
High hydrostatic pressure induced cell elongation, changes of growth rate, and thermotolerance in two types of bacteria, Bacillus subtilis and Klebsiella pneumonie. The cell length of B. subtilis and K. pneumonie was elongated 2. 0 and 1. 5 times those of control at 80 MPa (2 h) and 40 MPa (2 h), respectively. Protein of about 30-kDa was synthesized in B. subtilis cells by pressurization of 80 MPa for 2 hours. Pressure shocked K. pneumonie at 20 to 40 MPa for 2 hours showed thermotolerance (51°C, 10 min).
