INSECTICIDE RESISTANCE IN NEW BRUNSWICK POPULATIONS OF THE COLORADO POTATO BEETLE (COLEOPTERA: CHRYSOMELIDAE)

Abstract

A study conducted between 1982 and 1985 established the presence of a limited number of populations of Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), resistant to carbofuran in New Brunswick. Additional laboratory tests with two field-collected strains indicated that both were resistant to endosulfan; one strain also showed 43- and 37-fold levels of resistance to carbofuran and phosmet, respectively, and low-level (< 10-fold) resistance to permethrin, fenvalerate, disulfoton, and aldicarb. There has been no measurable spread of resistance.

Résumé

Une étude conduite entre 1982 et 1985 a établi la présence au Nouveau-Brunswick d’un nombre limité de populations de doryphores de la pomme de terre, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coléoptère : Chrysomelidae), résistantes au carbofuran. Des essais additionnels en laboratoire sur deux races recueillies au champ indiquèrent qu’elles étaient toutes deux résistantes à l’endosulfan. Une des races était 43 et 37 fois plus résistante que l’autre au carbofuran et au phosmet, respectivement, avec en plus un faible degré de résistance (< 10 fois) à la perméthrine, au disulfoton et à l’aldicarbe. La résistance ne s’est pas répandue de façon mesurable.
