Abstract

René-Edouard Claparède, an often overlooked Genevan zoologist, described nearly 200 species of animal in his short career. These are listed with the currently valid combinations.

INTRODUCTION

The year 2022 marks the 150th anniversary of the Natural History Museum of Geneva (MHNG) as an independent institution. It seems fitting to mark this by filling one of the lacunae left in the story of the Museum published for the bicentenary of the inauguration of the Musée Académique in 1820 (Ayer et al., 2020); the contribution of René-Édouard Claparède (1832-1871, known to his contemporaries as Édouard) to taxonomy (Fig. 1).

Claparède studied in Geneva (1850-1852), where he was greatly influenced by François-Jules Pictet (1809-1872), and Berlin (1853-1857) where he studied medicine and worked in the laboratory of Johannes Müller (1801-1858). He returned to Geneva with a medical doctorate and became professor of zoology, first as assistant to Pictet and then, from 1863, as full professor. As professor he was a member of the Commission d'Administration responsible for the Musée Académique (forerunner of the MHNG) and its collections. He published on the histology, embryology, physiology and systematics of invertebrates. His early work, under the influence of Müller and Christian Ehrenberg (1796-1876), concentrated on what were then known as the Infusoria (currently placed in the Ciliophora), but after a trip to Scotland with William Carpenter (1813-1885) his focus changed to marine annelids (Saussure, 1873).

Plagued by ill health from his youth, Claparède died in Sienna while returning from spending the winter in Naples for health reasons. The MHNG collections contain 18 boxes of histological slide preparations of Polychaeta made by Claparède (remounted by Hermann Fol in 1872) but none of the type specimens of the species he described has been traced and they are generally considered to have been lost. Many of his contributions were considered import in their day, but increasingly sophisticated techniques, his early death and confusion with his nephew Édouard Claparède (1873-1940), neurologist, psychologist and educator, have serve to limit his fame more than he deserves.

ARRANGEMENT AND FORMAT

Claparède is the author of 48 genus level names and 197 species level names of organisms currently classified in the kingdom Animalia. These are listed here along with the currently valid combination. The groups are listed alphabetically by phylum, class and family with first the generic names and then the species names in alphabetic order. Nomenclature follows the WoRMS database (WoRMS editorial board, 2021) unless explicitly stated.
