RESUME. — L'histoire récente de la géographie sociale en Allemagne et en Autriche offre l'image d'une alternance de phases de croissance et de stagnation. L'objectif, dans la période initiale, fut de combler un retard lié à des contingences historiques. Suivit une phase de développement rapide, d'innovation méthodique, en plusieurs directions qui prenaient l'espace en compte. Puis les choses progressèrent relativement lentement, car la période d'expérimentation fondée sur différentes solutions conceptuelles tirait en partie à sa fin. Aujourd'hui, la géographie sociale de type traditionnel paraît être supplantée par les premières esquisses d'une géographie du comportement. Le présent article étudie les motifs et le déroulement de ces transformations.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG. — Entwicklung und Stagnation in der Sozialgeographie.

— Die jûngere Disziplingeschichte der Sozialgeographie in Deutschland und Oesterreich bietet ein Bild sich abwechselnder Phasen der Entwicklung und Stagnation. Den produktiven Entwiirfen der Begrûndungsperiode, die ein wissen- schaftsgeschichtlich bedingtes Arbeitsdefizit auszugleichen hatte, folgte der schnel- le und raumgreifende Ausbau der methodischen Innovation zu mehreren For- schungsrichtungen. Danach verlief die Entwicklung vergleichsweise langsamer, weil das Experimentieren mit verschiedenen konzeptiven Losungen zum Teil bald beendet werden muBte. Heute scheint die Sozialgeographie herkommlichen Stils von Ansatzen zur geographischen Verhaltensforschung ùberholt zu werden. Der Artikel untersucht Anlafi und Verlauf des disziplinaren Umbruchs.

ABSTRACT. — Development and Stagnation in Social Geography in West Germany.

— The recent history of Social Geography in Germany and Austria presents a picture of alternating phases of growth and stagnation. In the initial period the objective was to make up for the backwardness linked to historical contingences. It was followed by a phase of rapid development, of methodological innovation, in several directions which took account of space. Then things progressed relatively slowly as the experimental period, based on different conceptual solutions, came in part to an end. Today, social geography of the traditional sort seems to have been supplanted by the first outlines of a geography of behaviour. The present article studies the motives and development of these transformations.
