Meridional transport of mean zonal kinetic energy from five years of hemispheric data

Authors:

Abstract

The mean zonal kinetic energy transports across arbitrary latitude walls in the northern hemisphere are evaluated from five years of data. It is found that the stress-work processes at the boundaries are much more significant than the actual advection of zonal kinetic energy. The stress component associated with the earth’s rotation accounts for a net northward transport of zonal kinetic energy across the equator.
