Abstract

The production of defective eggs was greater in meat-type turkeys than in egg-type turkeys when housed in cages. The frequency of broken eggs, membrane eggs and soft-shelled eggs was higher in the meat-type turkeys although the differences were not always statistically significant. The frequency of double-yolked and “slab-sided” eggs did not differ significantly between strains. A strain selected for increased 16-week body weight exhibited a higher incidence of two eggs laid per day than either the large bodied randombred control line form which it originated or the medium weight line selected for high egg production.
