Swallowing disorder is a symptom caused by many neurological diseases including trauma or diseases affecting the peripheral and central nervous system, diseases affecting the muscle and/or neuromuscular junction. The International Classification of Functionality, Disability and Health (ICF) classifies diseases in terms of body structures, body functions, activity and participation, personal and environmental factors. Although neurogenic swallowing disorders appear with deficiencies in body structures and functions, it also restricts activity and participation due to the effects of personal and environmental factors. The existing neurological problem may affect the mental state and quality of life of the individuals, and the accompanying swallowing disorders cause an additional burden for both patients and their families and caregivers. Therefore, approach to neurogenic swallowing disorders should address individuals in all aspects within the scope of ICF both in the evaluation and treatment phases. Health professionals who take part in the management of swallowing disorders should be aware that the emotional state and quality of life of the individual and family and/or caregivers may be adversely affected, and the need to address these issues within the rehabilitation program should not be forgotten.
