이 논문의 목적은 무슬림들이 자신들의 경전인 쿠란(Qur`an)의 권위를 높이기 위해 신성화와 정전화 과정에서 발전시킨 담론을 소개하고, 이에 대해 현대 서구 학자들이 제기한 비판적 시각을 고찰하는 것이다. 무슬림들은 전통적으로 유대교도와 기독교도를 `성서의 가족`이라고 부르며, 자신들은 유대교 및 기독교들과 함께 같은 유일신 하느님인 알라(Allah)로부터 계시를 받았다고 말한다. 이 같은 이슬람의 전통적인 계시 역사관에 따르면, 쿠란은 모세의 율법서, 시편, 복음서 등 과거 유대교와 기독교 경전의 전통을 잇는 제3의 경전이 된다. 이 같은 계시 역사관은 7세기 초 아라비아 반도에서 새롭게 등장한 신흥 종교로서의 이슬람이 중동 지역에서 기독교 및 유대교와 동등한 지위를 확보하는데 도움을 주었으나, 동시에 하나의 딜레마가 되었다. 왜냐하면 쿠란에 담긴 이슬람의 가르침이 구약과 신약에서 비롯된 계시의 전통을 잇는 것에 불과하다면, 이슬람 고유의 정체성과 가치가 모호해지기 때문이다. 이 같은 딜레마를 극복하고 쿠란의 권위 확보를 위해 무슬림들이 진행한 첫 번째 작업은 쿠란의 신성화였다. 이들은 `쿠란의 기적`이라는 개념을 만들어 냄으로써 쿠란이 무함마드라는 역사적 개인의 창작물이 아닌 알라의 작품 자체라는 사실을 증명하고자 했다. 그리고 이 같은 쿠란의 신성화를 위해서는 무함마드가 쿠란의 저술 과정에서 철저히 배제되어야할 필요가 있었고, 이를 위해 `문맹 예언자` 이론을 내세우기 시작했다. 무슬림들이 쿠란의 권위 확보를 위해 진행한 두 번째 작업은 쿠란의 정전화였다. 이슬람의 전통적인 정전화 과정 이론에 따르면, 최초의 정전으로 여겨지는 `우스만본(本)`은 예언자 무함마드의 사후 약 20년~25년 사이에 결집되었다. 무슬림 학자들은 쿠란의 정전화가 구약이나 신약에 비해 매우 빨리 진행되었으며, 이를 근거로 쿠란이 원래의 계시 내용을 오차 없이 그대로 수록한 가장 정통한 텍스트임을 주장했다. 구약과 신약에 비해 쿠란이 절대적인 정통성을 갖고 있다는 믿음은 중세 시기 무슬림 학자들에 의해 구약과 신약의 권위를 부정하는 `성경변질론`이란 이론의 정립으로 이어졌다. 현대 서구학자들은 무슬림 학자들이 쿠란의 권위 확보 과정에서 개발한 개념과 이론에 대해 의문을 제기했다. 그 일환으로 몽고메리 와트를 비롯한 일부 서구학자들은 무슬림들이 쿠란의 신성화를 입증하기 위해 내세운 `문맹 예언자` 이론에 대해 새로운 비판적 시각을 제시했다. 또한 완스버로우를 비롯한 일부 서구학자들은 쿠란의 정전화 작업이 완료된 시기가 무함마드 사후 20여 년 후가 아니라 그보다 한 세기 또는 두 세기 후로 보는 것이 합당하다는 이론을 제기함으로써 우스만본(本) 이야기는 허구적 신화에 불과하다고 주장했다.

The purpose of this paper is to review the discourses that Muslims have made to reinforce the authenticity of the Qur`an in the process of its sanctification and canonization, and to introduce the critical arguments raised by modern Western scholars against them. It is well known that the Qur`an describes Jews and Christians as Ahl al-Kitab(People of the Book). And it refers to the fact that Muslims, Jews, and Christians have their own scriptures originated from Allah(God). According to Muslims, the Qur`an is the last scripture of Allah, after the Torah, the Psalms, and the Gospels. This traditional view of revelation history, however, became a dilemma to the Muslims. This is because if Islamic teachings in the Qur`an are merely an extension of those contained in the previous scriptures, what are the original values of Islam which can be clearly distinguished from Judaism and Christianity? To answer that question, Muslims tried to prove that the Qur`an is the most authentic text. As part of that, Muslims accepted the doctrine of the Miracle of Qur`an((`i`jaz al-Qur`an), which holds that the Qur`an must be the product of Allah, because it has a miraculous quality, both in content and in form, that no human speech can match. And the doctrine of the Miracle of Qur`an was supplemented by the doctrine of al-Nabi al-Ummi(the Illiterate Prophet), which refers to the fact that the Prophet Muhammad, who could not read and write, was not able to create a major literary work such as the Qur`an. On the other hand, Muslims tried to prove that the Qur`an is more authentic than the scriptures of Judaism and Christianity, based on the fact that the period of canonization of the Qur`an was much shorter than that of the Bible. Muslims believe that the process of canonization ended under the third caliph Uthman bin Affan, which was about between 20 and 25 years after the death of Muhammad. To further reinforce the authenticity of the Qur`an, Muslims established the doctrine of Tahrif, which claims that Jews and Christians have distorted the original meaning of the Bible, adding or deleting a few sentences or discourses during the long process of its canonization. This paper, in its last part, introduces a set of controverted questions some Western scholars raised against the traditional Muslim claims. For example, Western scholars like W. Montgomery Watt, said that it is not unnatural to suppose that Muhammad could read and write, because he was a most intelligible in Mecca and had acted for a long time as a mercantile agent for Khadija. In addition, Western scholars like Wansbrough, suggested a hypothesis that the evolution of the Qur`anic text continued 200 years or more after the publication of the Uthman`s text.
