abstract

In the northern region of Tajikistan called Sugd lives a population speaking a language closely related to Sogdian. This people is called ‘Yaghnobi’ and takes its name from the river that runs through the valley. In a series of expeditions of the Italian ethnolinguistic and archeological mission in Tajikistan (2007-2012), we have investigated the relationship between the Yaghnobis and the Sogdians and the political-economic situation of the upper Zaravšan and Yaghnob basins in the eight century AD.
