This article attempts to think about the rise of celebrity narratives and celebrity-focussed attention from the point of view of institutional logics of survival. The first part covers mediatisation and celebrity, specifically the contribution of accounts of ‹mediatization› to broadening a field-theory-based account of media's impacts on social processes, via the concept of media meta-capital. This leads to the increasing salience of ‹celebrity› as the most concrete form of media-related capital. The second part covers the increasing reliance of media institutions on celebrity as hooks for narrative, endorsers of events, and general reinforcers of value, at a time of increasing challenge to the myth of the mediated center around which the social legitimacy of media institutions is built.
