Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: pCO2 (fCO2) autonomous; Abbreviation: pCO2_SW; Unit: micro-atmosphere; Observation type: surface underway; Measured or calculated: measured; Sampling instrument: GO 8050 underway pCO2 system; Location of seawater intake: engine room of CCGS Amundsen; Analyzing instrument: GO 8050 underway system; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: See Pierrot et al. [2009] for more details on GO 8050 underway system. pCO2 is calculated from the CO2 molar fraction, the equilibrator pressure, and the water vapour pressure (estimated from surface water salinity and temperature using Weiss and Price [1980]) following Dickson et al. [2007]. Then a temperature correction was applied to account for warming of seawater from the seawater intake to the GO8050 equilibrator. A temperature sensor was installed directly at the seawater intake to measure in-situ SST directly, and we used these values to temperature-correct our pCO2 values using the formula from Takahashi et al. (1993); Equilibrator type: shower-type equilibrator; Is the equilibrator vented or not: vented; Water flow rate: 2 L/min or slightly greater (2-2.4); Gas flow rate: ~100 ml/min; How was temperature inside the equilibrator measured: Hart thermometer; How was pressure inside the equilibrator measured: Setra pressure transducer, differential measurement; Drying method for gas: heaspace gas from the equilibrator goes through a condensor, then Naphion drying tubes, then to the CO2 analyzer; SEA CO2 gas detector manufacturer: LICOR; SEA CO2 gas detector model: LI-7000; Standardization technique: The LI-7000 is calibrated with a zero CO2 gas (ultra-pure N2 gas from Praxair), and three span gases (254.5, 431.3, and 554.2 ppm from Praxair), twice daily. These are secondary standards, which are calibrated using primary standards from NOAA.; Standardization frequency: twice daily; Standard gas manufacturer: Praxair; Standard gas concentration: 0 ppm, 254.5 ppm, 431.3 ppm, 554.2 ppm; Standard gas uncertainty: since the concentrations of standard gases are measured using the LI-7000 after a calibration with NOAA standards, the uncertainty of the standard gas CO2 concentrations should be +/- 1 ppm; Water vapor correction method: Weiss and Price [1980]; Temperature correction method: Takahashi et al. [1993]; At what temperature was pCO2 reported: pCO2 is reported at SST temperatures (measured by a temperature sensor located directly at the seawater intake); Uncertainty: Uncertainty of +/- 2 ppm (Pierrot et al., 2009); Method reference: Pierrot, D., Neill, C., Sullivan, K., Castle, R., Wanninkhof, R., Lüger, H., Johannessen, T., Olsen, A., Feely, R. A., & Cosca, C. E. (2009). Recommendations for autonomous underway pCO2 measuring systems and data-reduction routines. Deep Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in Oceanography, 56(8-10), 512-522. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.dsr2.2008.12.005; Researcher name: Tonya Burgers; Researcher institution: University of Manitoba.
  • Parameter or Variable: CO2 molar fraction; Abbreviation: xCO2_EQU; Unit: micromol per mol (or ppm); Observation type: surface underway; Sampling instrument: GO 8050 underway pCO2 system; Analyzing instrument: LI-7000 gas analyzer; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: dried air from wet box equilibrator is read by the LI-7000 every ~2 min, the LI-7000 is calibrated twice daily; Uncertainty: the precision of the measurements is +/- 1 ppm, and the accuracy of the instrument is nominal +/-1%.
  • Parameter or Variable: H2O molar fraction; Abbreviation: xH2O_EQU; Unit: millimol per mol (or ppt); Observation type: surface underway; Sampling instrument: GO 8050 underway pCO2 system; Analyzing instrument: LI-7000; Uncertainty: The precision of the measurements is 0.05 ppt, and the accuracy of the instrument is 1%.

  • Parameter or Variable: pressure of gas analyzer; Abbreviation: PRES_LICOR; Unit: hPa; Observation type: surface underway; Sampling instrument: GO 8050 underway pCO2 system; Analyzing instrument: pressure sensor inside LI-7000 is the 13A-015A pressure sensor.; Uncertainty: accuracy of 0.1%.
