Description
Photograph of the "White House" in cave ruins of Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, [s.d.]. In the background at left, three saddled horses are visible along a small slope. To the right, a man is visible squatting down near the other side of the small slope, while another man further to the right wearing a hat can be seen sitting along the ridge. At the top of the slope, rectangular walls of ruins are visible. One man can be seen standing beside the rightmost wall, while the other man is visible standing on a structure behind that wall. On the cliff wall beside the man standing on the structure, small images can be seen etched into the stone. In the extreme background along the cliff wall, three additional stone buildings in ruins can be seen. The cliff wall extends from the ground to the top of the image.; Caption on side of image reads: "Older than any history in America 'The White House,' in Canyon de Chelly. Built by an unknown people, perhaps the Aztecs. Little is known of them and only remnants of their life is left to tell us of their ancient existence. This deep canyon is 24 miles long, red cliffs rising 1500 feet above the white sand floor. Was a refuge to these cliff dwellers from marauding foes. Picture writings on the wall below describe a lost story".
