BACKGROUND: Simple renal cysts are one of the most common benign renal masses in adults which should be treated if symptoms are present. In this study, the effect of one-step injection of alcohol and the preservation of drainage catheter with alcohol injection without the survival of the catheter was compared in the treatment of simple renal cysts.
METHODS: In a clinical trial study, patients with simple renal cysts with clinical symptoms, after inserting nephrostomy into the cyst, the cystic fluid was completely discharged and 96% ethanol was injected into the cyst. The catheter was clamped and the alcohol was kept in the cyst for 20 minutes. During which the patient was placed in prone, supine and bilateral positions at 5-minute intervals and after 20 minutes all of the alcohol was aspirated and discharged. Patients were followed up within 6 to 18 months and clinical symptoms and cyst recurrences were evaluated.
RESULTS: In this study, 60 patients were divided into two groups of 30 subjects in the intervention group and other 30 patients in control group. In term of sexuality, in the intervention and control group 63.3% and 56.7% were male respectively and the rest were female. The mean age of the patients was 60.43±7.95 and 60.8±13.99 years and the average of cyst volume was 126.73±118.44 and 114.23±83.04 cc in the intervention and control group respectively. The two groups were matched in terms of age, sex and cyst size. After 6 to 18 months of follow-up, in the intervention and control groups, frequency of cyst recurrence was 13.3% and 16.7% respectively.
CONCLUSIONS: After 6 to 18 months of follow-up period, there was no significant difference between the outcomes of treatment of simple renal cysts by the methods of one-step alcohol injection and maintenance of drainage catheter compared to alcohol injection without catheter survival.
