BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to map the localization of colon polyps an also to reveal the relationship between the histopathological features of colon polyps with location, age and gender.
METHODS: The colonoscopy procedures of 2563 performed between 2014-2019 years were analyzed retrospectively and 560 patients who underwent colonoscopic polypectomy were included in the study. Patients with familial polyposis coli syndrome, and patients who had colorectal malignancy or underwent colorectal surgery were excluded.
RESULTS: The mean age was 51.5±15.7 years and the most common gender was male (61.4%). Of the polyps, 45.2% were in the 40-60 age range and 80.2% were smaller than 5 mm. Only one polyp was detected in 75.9% (n:425) of the cases; two polyps in 77 patients and more than three in 58 patients. The polyps were most frequently in the rectum. In addition, a statistically significant relationship was found between the location of polyps and age (P=0.024). There was no statistically significant relationship between the localization of polyps and gender. The most common polyps were adenomatous. Hyperplastic polyps were seen in the second frequency. There was no statistically significant relationship between histopathological results with gender (P=0.2). However, there was a statistically significant relationship between histopathological results with age (P=0.003).
CONCLUSIONS: In the publications in the literature, it has been often emphasized that hyperplastic polyps are the most common colorectal polyps. However, in our series, it was concluded that adenomatous polyps were detected more frequently than hyperplastic polyps.
