Global History, Pluralism, and the Question of Traditions

The debates on multi-perspectivity in the field of global history need to be combined with some reflections on the evolution of historiography as a global professional milieu. Local approaches to global history cannot be primarily developed from the assumption of unbroken historiographical “traditions." Rather, it is necessary to take the worldwide entanglements of academic historiography into the picture. As part of such an endeavor, global hierarchies of knowledge need to be problematized.
