Abstract
This paper was presented at a conference on electronic publishing sponsored by the National Center for Automated Information Retrieval in 1991. It draws on the author's work designing and building an electronic treatise covering Social Security law, within the limitations of the LEXIS online service of the period. It reviews the more obvious advantages works of this kind can offer before focusing on the very different relationship between author text and authoritative primary material possible in this new research environment.
