Abstract:
The high dropout rate of engineering students is not a local problem; it is extensible in a global way to all educational centers and countries, and the difficulty for these students to complete their studies is clearly proven. The causes of this high number of dropouts are very different and there are many studies that show it. Perhaps, one of these causes is due to the difficulty of overcoming some of the so-called STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects.

This study presents the results of applying different methodological strategies in the teaching of one of these subjects (Statistics) during the academic years 2010-2011 to 2017-2018 to a total of 1246 first year students in the Computer Engineering Degree. They show the positive influence that the progressive implementation of different teaching methodologies has had on some academic indexes, showing how the profiles of students "not presented", "passes" and "fails" have changed.
