We then aim to achieve regular observations of NLCs by a tethered balloon system capable of flying over the lower clouds (altitude of 1,000–2,000 m) that frequently interrupt NLC observations from the ground. We conducted tethered-balloon observations in Nayoro, Hokkaido, during July 13–20, 2021, to evaluate and optimize the observation systems and the operation procedure. Although signatures of NLCs were not observed during the period, the balloon reached an altitude of 700 m more than five times and reached a maximum altitude of approximately 1,200 m one time.
