Biodiesel fuel production generates about 10% (w/w) glycerol as the main byproduct. Due to increasing demand for biodiesel fuels, the production of hydrogen, syngas and medium heating value gas from the glycerol is highly desirable to improve the economics of biodiesel fuel production process. In this study, glycerol steamgasification with the biochar of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys heterocycla f. pubescens) was carried out for the hydrogen-rich syngas production. The process parameters of the steamgasification such as glycerol concentration, glycerol feed rate, and gasification temperature caused the production of the syngas having the hydrogen content of above 50%. The results show that the steamgasification of glycerol with biochar could be a valuable process for the production of hydrogen-rich syngas.
