Hydrocarbon production from molasses was performed by a combination of hydrothermal treatment and catalytic reaction. In the hydrothermal treatment, a oxygenated compound containing 5-hydroxy-2-methyl-furfuflal (5-HMF) as a main component as a catalytic reaction material was produced from molasses. Thereafter, potassium contained in the oxygenated compound was removed and subjected to a catalytic reaction. In the catalytic reaction carried out at 470°C, aromatic hydrocarbons were obtained , the main components of which were naphthalene.
