Abstract:
The development and creation of new green spaces and the improvement of existing parks and gardens, is considered in the Tehran metropolitan area, during the last 2 decades, as an alternative strategy to alleviate air pollution and increase public health level.
This paper reviews the status of green spaces in Tehran, considering the challenges and threats in this area.
Land-use change and replacement of green spaces by constructions, as well as water shortage and increasing global temperature can be regarded as threatening factors in the development and maintenance of green spaces in Tehran.
Toward the sustainability of urban green spaces, some strategies will be discussed in this review, including planting drought resistance ornamentals and selecting the right place and right plant, treating municipal wastewater for irrigation and designing roof gardens and green walls.
