Abstract:
In order to study the incidence of Verticillium wilt, a survey of 94 symptomatic artichoke fields was conducted from 1999 to 2002 in Comunidad Valenciana (eastern Spain). Results indicated that the disease is widespread in all artichoke-growing areas of Alicante, Castellón and Valencia provinces where V. dahliae has been isolated in 72%, 83% and 80% of sampled fields respectively. The Spanish production of artichoke is based in cultivar Blanca de Tudela that is propagated vegetatively via stumps. The use of infected stumps has greatly contributed to the dissemination of the pathogen. V. dahliae causes extensive vessel browning, chlorosis of the lower leaves, severe stunting, wilting, and finally plant death resulting in significant economic losses. Symptoms of the disease have been also observed in some fields of seed propagated artichoke. Pathogenicity to artichoke of selected V. dahliae isolates was demonstrated two months after inoculation with an aqueous suspension of 106 microconidia ml-1.
