Abstract:
The influence of the combined application of different doses of nitrogen and potassium on the must colour of cv. Tempranillo was examined. The study was carried out in 2000, in Duero river region (Spain). The plants were treated with 3 nitrogen (0, 50 and 200 g N vine-1) and 3 potassium doses (0, 60 and 120 g K2O per vine) in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The fertilization rates applied did not significantly affect either the vigour or productive capacity of vines or the size of berries. Higher potassium supplies increased the total soluble solids content and decreased the total acidity of berries, but they did not affect the colour density and hue of the must. The higher nitrogen doses delayed the accumulation of sugars during ripening, compared to the other treatments. Average dose of nitrogen (50 g N vine-1) increased the levels of anthocyanins in the skin compared with the untreated control vines, which significantly increased the colour density of the must. The blue component of must colour was higher as the nitrogen fertilization dose was increased.
