Abstract:
In Grosseto, Italy, a research was carried out from 1992 to 1995 in order to study the response of the olive cultivar “Frantoio” to different training systems, ground-cover and irrigation.
This area has a typical Mediterranean climate; the soils are loose and exposed to erosion.
All the variables had effects on the crop performance.
The free bush produced more than other training systems, ground-cover reduced the yield about 37%, whereas irrigation increased the yield about 40%. Ground-cover without irrigation caused lower production and limited tree growth.
Ground-cover associated with irrigation allows for higher production than the standard olive cultivation.
The combination ground-cover plus irrigation assures both, soil conservation and a good crop production.
