Abstract:
Time to different phenological stages of 13 garlic (Allium sativum L.) clones were measured on six sequential outdoor plantings. Also, the effect of cold-storage conditions on development was studied in a glasshouse experiment. Phenological observations were carried out three times a week and the duration of the different phenological stages was related to temperature or to both temperature and photoperiod, using a linear models.

In the glasshouse, the storage of the bulbs at 4 °C for 4 weeks reduced the time from planting to sprout emergence in most of the clones. When bulbs of the same clones were stored at 12–15 °C only three clones formed bulbs. In the field, the periods planting-sprout emergence and emergence-bulb initiation were shorter on late sowing dates in all the clones. The time from bulb initiation to maturity showed little variation with planting date. The linear model accounted for most (over 90 %) of the variation observed in time to bulbing within clones. Model parameter estimates varied between clones suggesting genotypic variation for sensitivity to both photoperiod and temperature.
